Building An Indestructible Immune System

We believe there are several factors involved in building an indestructible immune system, and some tips are listed here.

Working Out

STRATEGY 1

Do the right thing!

The first line of defense in building your super-powerful immune system is simply to do the right thing when it comes to your health. Simply put: give your body what it needs and to avoid what creates harm.

  • Wash your hands thoroughly with high quality products (Not antibacterial soap/sanitizer!)

  • Maintain a healthy weight

  • 80% greens and 20% animal proteins (high quality all around)

  • Associate with positive people

  • Consume alcohol in moderation if at all

  • Throw the cigarettes away

  • Run away from fast food!

Healthy Eating

STRATEGY 2

High Quality Nutrition Consumption

Nutrition is a critical factor of immune response, and malnutrition is the most common cause of immune deficiency worldwide.

Staying well while those around you sniffle and sneeze requires that you extract as much nutrition from your diet as you can, loading up on the foods that pack the biggest nutritional punch. Avoid processed foods, grains, dairy, and sugar to strengthen your immune system. Select foods loaded with specific immune-boosting nutrients.

AVOID:

  • Sugar, fake sugar

  • Processed food

  • Food coloring, dyes

  • Dairy

  • Grains, breads, white flour (=sugar!)

  • Bone broth (bone stock): bone broth or stock is made from animal bones (chicken, turkey, beef), and the simmering process pulls out high quality and bio-available calcium and other minerals to support your immune system, namely white blood cells. They get their power from Calcium, which is deficient in almost everyone’s diet (even if you drink milk and eat cheese). Most commercial dairy products are ultra flash-pasteurized, which kills the dairy enzymes that help you absorb calcium from what you are eating. So the calcium is there, but isn’t absorbed or utilized by your body systems. Bone broth, spinach, kale, broccoli, and almonds can be great food sources of calcium.

  • Fermented Foods: One of the most healthful fermented foods is kefir. Kefir is an ancient cultured, enzyme-rich food full of friendly microorganisms that balance your "inner ecosystem" and strengthen immunity. Besides kefir, other good fermented foods include natto, kimchee, miso, tempeh, pickles, sauerkraut, yogurt (watch out for sugar), and olives.

  • Grass Fed Beef: Grass-fed beef is very high in vitamins A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, zinc, and CLA. CLA (conjugated linoleic acid, a fatty acid) is three to five times higher in grass-fed animals than grain-fed animals and is an immune system enhancer.

  • Coconuts and Coconut Oil: When selecting coconuts and coconut oil, make sure you choose organic ones that are unrefined, unbleached, made without heat processing or chemicals, and are non-GMO.

Here is a list of supplements and nutrients that have the potential to support your needs; we are happy to provide some personalized insight to meet your needs:

STRATEGY 3

Stress Control

Stress has a major influence on the function of your immune system, which is why you've probably noticed you're more likely to catch a cold when you're under a lot of stress.

Try at least one of these every day for 5 minutes and watch your immune system become indestructible:

  • Meditation

  • Deep Breathing

  • Visualization

  • Writing about gratitude

  • Reading motivational quotes

  • Looking at pictures of your children

  • Reflecting on something that brings joy

  • What other stress busters do you use?

Dr. Lee also mixes an herbal tonic (liquid blend of herbs) that combine well to help you deal with stress and overcome the effects of past stressors. Ask at the office for more info. Many people are raving fans of the adrenal tonic!

STRATEGY 4

Move Your Body + Stop Moving Your Body

These are two strategies in one because you need to move your body with exercise regularly, and you need to stop moving your body with uninterrupted sleep.

Here are some ideas to create variety in your exercise (please consult with our team for specific advice): Spin class, weight training (Greystone YMCA), dancing, gymnastics (DEFY Birmingham), yoga, pilates, barre method (Pure Barre several locations in Birmingham), boot camps, running, martial arts

When it comes to sleep, we have all been told that we need uninterrupted 8-10 hours each night, but my recommendation is to determine what your body needs and then stick with it. Some other recommendations:

  • Stop watching TV at least 60 minutes before going to bed

  • Make the room very dark

  • Keep the temperature at 70 degrees F

  • Take a hot bath 90 minutes before bed

  • Move any electrical devices away from your bed

STRATEGY 5

The Master Controller is the “Secret Sauce”

Chiropractic care specifically corrects spinal misalignments called vertebral subluxations. These misalignments of the spine can put pressure on the spinal cord and nerves which exit at each level of the spine. This can cause stress and interference of the nerve flow.

Simply put, whatever message that is trying to be sent from the brain out to the body cannot be sent properly. Chiropractic adjustments correct spinal abnormalities thus relieving stress from the nervous system and allowing it to function properly.

The immune system, like every other system in the body, is coordinated and controlled by the nervous system. Specific immune organs including the spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes are all in communication with the master controller- the brain- through nerves which connect them.

Picture a telephone wire. During an immune response, the brain and the immune system “talk to each other” and coordinate the body’s response to the exposure. This process is essential for maintaining balance and good health in the body. If the nervous system cannot function properly, the immune system cannot respond as well as intended, and the body becomes susceptible to bacteria, viruses, and illness.

A proper spinal adjustment by a wellness chiropractor can help boost the immune response by reconnecting that power from brain to body. A study conducted in the 1970s showed that chiropractic patients had 200% more immune competence than otherwise healthy subjects who were not under chiropractic care, and 400% more immune power than those who were chronically ill (Ron Pero, PhD, Institute of Preventive Medicine, New York, NY, 1975).
